Michael sometimes used to use the screen name TRANEFAN1 when he talked to people via AOL Instant Messaging. Lately TRANEFAN1 has been activated online by an unknown user. We have determined that this person is not involved with Michael's disappearance. Since Michael had not used the name for so long, it simply expired, and someone else picked it up.
L.A. Sheriffs Department Involved
L.A. Sheriffs detectives uncovered a significant lead in June, 2000. They have released this sketch of a potential witness who may have been in the dormitory on the night of Michael's disappearance. Anyone with information about this person is urged to contact the Sheriffs at (323) 890-5500. Unfortunately, no information has resulted since this sketch was released.
Sheriffs, UCPD, and family have worked very hard on the investigation. Michael's computer has been extensively examined. He did not have a car at school, so we are sure he did not just drive away. All college and high school friends have been interviewed repeatedly. Michael had not had any problems or arguments with his family previous to his disappearance. Nothing happened that was out of the ordinary--the night before he disappeared we had been talking together and arranging for him to come home for Christmas. Michael had no hidden alternative lifestyle. We have checked into possible cult connections, and we have even spoken to several psychics. The campus and surrounding areas were extensively searched, both by humans and by dogs. Hospitals have been checked and flyers sent out and posted in thousands of places . Unfortunately, no results yet.
Michael was featured on MSNBC in a program called Missing Persons. It first aired on Friday, September 28 at 8:00 p.m. and was repeated at least twice. Our story has also appeared nationally on "Extra," "National Enquirer TV," and "Primer Impacto." (A program on Univision, a Spanish language network)
Our efforts with publicity, including TV programs, mass mailings of flyers, bumper stickers, and e-mails have generated some sightings and calls to the authorities from people with suggestions and ideas. The Sheriffs investigation is ongoing and they say there is still a lot to do.
